Scientists have not yet figured out how much immunity (protection from an infectious disease) people have after recovering from a natural case of Covid-19, or how long natural protection lasts. Some early studies suggest that natural immunity may fade more quickly in certain people. That may be particularly true for those who have had mild or asymptomatic (no symptoms) cases.

Based on what we know so far, getting the vaccine may be recommended even if you had Covid-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released interim guidelines for the use of both Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines. Per those CDC guidelines: "Data from clinical trials indicate that…COVID-19 vaccines are safe in persons with evidence of a prior SARS-CoV-2 [Covid-19] infection. Vaccination should be offered to persons regardless of history of prior symptomatic or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 [Covid-19] infection."

When a vaccine becomes available to you, you can discuss in further detail with your healthcare professional (doctor, nurse, or pharmacist).
